Toddlers are notoriously picky eaters. Not a parent exists that hasn’t worried about their toddlers eating habits at one time or another.

Some worry their toddlers aren’t eating enough, others worry that their toddlers are eating too much, and still others worry that their toddlers aren’t eating a wide enough variety of different foods.

The good news is that if you do things right, you can set your toddler on a path to good eating indefinitely.

How do you do it?

First and foremost, know that when it comes to eating most toddlers are just learning about food, and just starting to develop habits.

You don’t want to force food on your toddler at any time, or suggest that they clean their plate or take just one last bite of anything.

Why? This may set them up for a lifetime of food struggles.

Rather, the best way to support good eating habits is to have available at all times a variety of healthy foods in your home.

Generally as long as toddlers eat one or two items from each food group within a 2-3 day time frame, they are doing well.

Here are some other things you can do to encourage healthy eating habits:

Eat as a Family – This may not be possible every day of the week, but at least 1-2 days per week you should encourage your family to gather together around the table for a good, wholesome meal. Include lots of different foods that are healthy and nutritious. Toddlers learn by example, and watching other family members eat and interact in an inviting environment will encourage your toddler to do the same as time goes on.

Don’t Require Your Toddler to Clean His Plate – This is a common well intentioned mistake some parents make. Toddlers eating habits are peculiar, but they do know when they are hungry. Forcing them to finish food they can’t or won’t eat will only result in power struggles and potentially problems with food later in life.

Keep the Refrigerator Stocked with Healthy Snacks – If you don’t have dozens of cookies laying about the house your toddler will be less likely to eat them. That said allow your toddler some sweet treats when they are visiting relatives or a friend’s house. Just remember to keep sweets to a minimum at your house.

Cook a Variety of Foods – If you normally cook fish twice a week, your child will become accustomed to it as part of their routine.

It will be much easier to convince your toddler to try new things if they are an ordinary part of your diet, then if out of the blue you decide to try new foods that are unusual or generally unappealing.

As your toddler grows and develops they will eventually develop more routine eating habits. In the meantime simply providing healthy alternatives and variety in their diet is a great way to jump start a healthy diet.

Getting Your Wedding Guests to Save The Date

You are engaged – congratulations! Undoubtedly, immediately after your friends and family squeal with delight over your news, the first question they will ask is, “So when is the date?” It can be somewhat annoying, especially if you are very recently engaged, but really all your loved ones are asking so they can mentally save the date.

So begins your wedding planning. Obviously the first thing you need to do is start viewing places for your ceremony and reception, because without those there is no wedding.

Once you have nailed down your wedding’s place and date – then its time to get the word out. This is especially important if you are having your wedding during peak wedding season (usually the spring, early summer) or over any holiday weekend. Keep in mind, that while surely your guests are looking forward to celebrating with you, they can have conflicts. Wedding season unfortunately conflicts with graduation season, and long weekends are usually booked up with vacation plans way in advance.

If possible, you want to send your save the date cards out 6-9 months in advance. Lean toward the longer end of that spectrum if you have guests coming long distance or if you have a popular wedding date booked.

Now comes the fun part.

What should they look like? Do they have to match? Who should I send them to? What should my save the dates say? How much information do I need to include? The answer to all those questions is easy. Its entirely up to you and your fiancee. As long as the most important information is on there – your names and your date all the rest is gravy. However, to help guide you through the decision making we offer these words of advice.

What should they look like?

Save the dates are your opportunity to get the word out about your approaching wedding in fun, expressive way. Save the date announcements can be more casual than your more formal wedding invitation. However, keep in mind this is your chance to create a first impression. Your guests will receive your save the date and start forming impressions on what kind of event it will be. So we suggest you be unique, but use high quality materials. Nothing sends the wrong message like flimsy materials.

Do they have to match?

Nope. They don’t have to match the rest of your wedding, but they can. If you are the kind of person who has been dreaming of what your wedding would look like even before you were engaged then perhaps you have some ideas already for color themes, design styles, etc. If that’s the case, great! Work with it! However, often times those types of wedding decisions are not solidified so early in the game so don’t sweat it. The priority is to get those save the dates in the mail so you get on your guests’ calendars. Another consideration, if you are the type A personality with your wedding plans all mapped out, you are going to be seeing a lot of those colors or design decisions over the upcoming months. So much so that you might get a little sick of your chosen colors (gasp! Say it isn’t so!) The save the date offers the opportunity to use your second choice color ideas, just to mix it up a bit. The point is, if you see something completely unrelated to your wedding ideas that you absolutely love – go for it!

Who do I send them to?

Lose the notion that the save the date has to be sent to everyone on your list – because it doesn’t. In fact, (and you didn’t hear this from us) if there are people on your list that are what we like to call “obligatory invites” = people you really have to invite due to family ties, or professional connections, this would be a good time to hold off. We aren’t saying to disinvite them, but if they only receive the formal invitation then no harm done. The reality is if you are inviting your boss to the wedding simply because it’s the politically correct thing to do, then you are probably secretly hoping he/she doesn’t come. Having said all this, we do recommend you make sure you send your save the date to people who might interact with eachother. Say you have a distant Great Aunt Matilda who you are inviting purely out of family obligation. Normally you would not send her a save the date. However, if your Great Aunt Matilda has dinner over your cousin Amy’s house and sees your save the date hanging on her refrigerator there might be feelings hurt.

What should my save the dates say? How much information do I need to include? The way to think of save the dates is almost like directions. You are instructing your guests to save the date, and beyond that you are giving them all the most important information in order to make arrangements to attend. For a local wedding with not many long distance guests you could get away with just your names, the date of your wedding and the town where you will be holding the event. However, that is rarely the case. Usually planning couples have information they would like to communicate. Here are the various ways to do so and things you can include:

The date:

Your names:

You can keep it casual and just use your first names or if you are concerned this might confuse your guests you can use both of your full names. However, the point can be made if your guests don’t know you by your first names, why are they being invited?

The place:

You really don’t need to give them the exact GPS location of you wedding but just a general region would be a good idea. For example, “New York City.”

Everything beyond those first three elements is optional.

Hotel information:

Chances are you are going to reserving some hotel blocks for your guests. If you know that information it would very helpful to your guests to have it early with your save the date. However if haven’t gotten to your blocks yet, don’t worry. You can include that information with your formal invitation. If you aren’t doing blocks for your guests, its still not a bad idea to recommend places to stay to your guests.

Website URL:

Wedding websites are a great idea. It gives you a place to communicate all the information you have unlimited. It also can be updated as decisions are made – which should be a great comfort to you.

Airport information:

If a lot of your guests are flying to your wedding, then you might want to include how far your ceremony and reception location is from the airport. Also to note, several of the major airlines will offer a discount that you can pass onto your guests. You simply need to call the airlines in advance and explain that you are planning a large event.

Car rental information:

Car rental company will do the same. They will offer a discount that you can pass onto your guests. Again, call the car rental companies in advance and explain that you are planning a large event.

Things to do/Places to eat:

This type of information is totally optional but can be a nice touch for your guests especially if they are coming long distance to attend your wedding. It could convince your guests to make an extended weekend of your wedding if you suggest some fun activities for everyone before and after your wedding. Also, if you have favorite restaurant recommendations that can be a nice personal touch for your guests to enjoy.

Lastly, be sure to include the text “Formal Invitation to Follow”

If you don’t you will be surprised at how many people will call you thinking your save the date is your wedding invitation. Your great Aunt Matilda (assuming you sent her that save the date after all) is going to ask, “Where is the rsvp card?”

Music Review Of Math And Physics Club By Math And Physics Club

Math and Physics Club are an indie pop (Or Indie Rock) band based in Seattle, Washington. They are Charles Bert (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar), Kevin Emerson (Drums), Ethan Jones (Bass/Keyboards), James Werle (Lead Guitar), and Saundrah Humphrey (Violin). They were formed in 2004, and have released three EPs and one full length album through Santa Barbara-based Matinee Recordings. Their genre also includes twee, and according to PitchforkMedia, their music were described as “music to hold hands to.” Suitable for most lovey dovey couple!

Math and Physics Club is so fun to listen to. You could listen to the voice of Charles all day and enjoy the music at the same time. No complaints about his voice (and the rest of Math and Physics Club) and the simplicity of their music, and yet impressive songs and lyrics has left a vivid mark on my mind.

The album opens with “Darling, Please Come Home” which is such an infectious track that i think it’s one of the best tracks on the album. The guitar of this track keeps repeating in a tempo and pace that is so friendly to our ears and i can’t help it but mocking to play a guitar whenever i listen to this song. When Charles sings, “Darling won’t you please come homeŔ I knew they had me, they had me thinking about this song all the time. Amazing and lovely opener! I keep imagining myself saying, “Darling, won’t you please come homeŔ

“I Know What I Want” is perfect when you are proposing! The music playing of this song is just so soothing and take note of the lyrics of this song, “How did you know me so well? You smile but you won’t ever tell… It’s you… I know what i want..” You can hear Charles’ lovely voice which is a bonus to this song! He sings so effortlessly while the rest of Math and Physics Club join in with their guitar, bass, drums and even violin. It’s a short song but it definitely worths your time for listening to it.

Stop complaining about the dates that end up in rain and check out “April Showers”. Somehow, i can feel that Charles is singing about a date of his. Singing about how wonderful rain can be (you can replace “Rain” with “Shower” ) if you were with someone that you love. Charles goes, “There’s no place I’d rather be, than with you right next to m

e, huddled up under my umbrella, though the rain keeps falling downŔ You can hear lots of guitar plucking in “April Showers” and it’s like Math and Physics Club are playing in a cave whenever i heard the guitar plucking sound/part. Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba… April Showers… Though i prefer October Showers, my birth month!

“Holidays and Saturdays” is a slow-paced song and it shows Math and Physic Club’s versatility. They’re already very good with mid and fast-tempo songs,”Holidays and Saturdays” is just another song to show that they can even perform slow-tempo song. Picnic in the park, croquet on the lawn, staying up and talking until dawn… These are the things that we do on weekends, aren’t we? A nice way to slow down the tempo of the album.

“La La La Lisa” brings the tempo back! It has a few starts and stops in between but nevertheless, it still makes a good song. I wonder who is Lisa (a girl he met/saw in a club?), Charles sings about her as if he’s so much in love with her, dying to hold her hands, dying to kiss her, dying to be with her. It goes, “I would have died for just one kiss, I had the chance just to hold handsŔ It’s just so smart of Math and Physics Club to write such witty lyrics. When Charles sings, “La La La La La LaŔ There must have been many things going on between Lisa and him.

“Look At Us Now” starts off with acoustic guitar and violin. Lovely! Nice opening to get me wondering for more. “We were in love, but look at us now, ba ba ba ba baŔ It is as if they were so much in love, until now. “Look at us now…,” Charles added. Then there are guitar solo followed by violin solo, what a play in such a short song!

“You’ll Miss Me” is another slow tempo song on the album. It’s one of my favourite songs on the album. I just love the guitar, bass, piano, violin and even the vocals on this song. It found its way to my heart even at the first listen. Charles goes, “Never should have left this carry on for so long, but I dare say that you’ll miss meŔ and then he goes again with, “La da da da da la da da….” I gotta say, it’s just so good! Each time after the chorus, the piano comes in exactly at the right time. Really impressive!

“Cold as Minnesota” has a very tasty and groovy bassline to it. The bassline itself is the best asset of this song. Accompanied by handclaps after the break, it’s one of the most dance-able songs on the album. This song is as if Charles were getting mad at someone, “Step outside in the cold, i don’t want you here tomorrow when I wake up”, but Math and Physics Club made it a groovy track that is so delicious to our ears. I can’t say no!

From the lyrics of “Such a Simple Plan”, it seems to be a sad song. But again, Math and Physics Club made it an enjoyable and dance-able track. Charles sings about a girl who’s having a failed relationship, “Summer turned into June, she spent morning night and noon in a tiny room, typing away to another sad romanticŔ It ends with, “She cries and reads herself to sleep instead”. Such a simple plan but with a deep eaning!

Math and Physics Club ends with “Last Dance”, a poppy and cheerful song that you want to tap your feet and dance to. The two guitar-playing were well arranged and timed. One is the lead guitar, the other a rhythm guitar. “Why does it have to be sad? Now darling don’t be mad, let’s put the past behind, and hit the floor before the last dance… To make you fall for me” Next time when you’re having a party, please dance with your partnet and remember the lyrics from “Last Dance”. You’ll have the best last dance ever!

Rating: I can imagine myself singing a couple of songs take from the album. “Math and Physics Club” is really created for a couple. All their songs and lyrics are meant to be listened and enjoyed by couples and lovers! If you ever have a chance to sing to your loved ones in front of a big crowd, you’ll know which album to look for! Simple but heart-melting, i can’t help it but give it 7.8 o

What is a First Edition Book?

A First Edition book is a book that is the first printing of the first edition of a book. That does not mean the first book to be printed but the first run of books that are printed of a newly published book. There can be hundreds or more in each printing. To find a true First Edition in a used paperback book or used hardcover book can be very frustrating. But is worth the effort if you find the book you want. As time passes most used paperback books are thrown away so, a First Edition in used paperback books are rare. The same can be said for used hardcover books, they are generally discarded or they no longer have their dust jackets. The dust jackets are valuable when reselling/buying a used hardcover book. They have details on them that help determine the book’s origin. Here at www.booksatfarwest.com, I strive to state First Edition only when the book meets the following guidelines.

It is very hard to identify true First Editions most of the time. Below is a list of identifications that should appear on the copyright and/or title pages.

Wording—First Edition, First Printing, First Impression, First Published or Published

Take note that some publishers will state “First Printing by (publisher). This is not a First Edition but a first printing by a different publisher than original publisher.

Number line, it will look like this, 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Usually the (1) should be on the number line. This indicates it is the 1st printing. If the 1 is missing that usually means that the book is a second printing. There are some publishers who remove the 1 when printing the first edition, Random House is one. If the 1 is missing and you are not sure of the publisher’s rules it is a good idea to consult a bibliography or guide to First Editions. The general rule is number line should have the (1).

Dates on copyright page and title page should agree.

The phrase, Copyright 1942, should be on the copyright page and on page where title is, usually at bottom, 1942. Sometimes there will be a year between the dates. This is not uncommon if book was copyright late in one year and published in the next year. Occasionally there will be more dates with the copyright date. This will occur when part of the book had been published in a journal or anthology. In this case the last date should agree with title page date. The rule for dates is they should be the same, the copyright and title page dates.

Undated Books, rare or vintage

Many of the older books will not have dates on them. This makes if even harder to determine a First Edition. You will need to use a bibliography or library guide to tell for sure. Some older books will have a date on the title page but no copyright date or visa versa. Book Club editions also have no corresponding dates. General rule is if dates are missing check with sources before buying. A good seller will state if book is a Book Club Edition. http://www.booksatfarwest.com has listed vintage books that may have been First Editions, but I could not confirm it so they are sold as vintage books.

There are “sellers” selling book club books as First Editions. Sometimes it is hard to tell because of the era it was printed in. If you are interested in a certain book and want a First Edition do your homework before purchasing. Check out the title, book size, dates (if available,) publisher and the color of book cover all of these will help determine its status. Just because there is only one date on the book does not make it a First Edition.

I hope this information will be helpful for the new collector, when they go to purchase a used paperback book or used hardcover book that says it is a First Edition. Remember when buying a used paperback book or used hardcover book, to research or ask questions if you have doubts.

Golf clubs are important in golf, as they can determine how far and how fast a ball can go. There are also different designs of golf clubs, depending on the length of the shaft, the material out of which the club is made, and the width or area of the spot where club meets ball. An average golfer will have a set of about fourteen clubs, consisting of the different types of golf clubs, all of which are designed for different parts of the course and different scenarios.

The Woods are the longest kinds of golf clubs, and they are often utilized to undertake long shots. Woods have large heads where the club will meet the ball; these heads are somewhat spherical, with one side bulging out like the edge of a baguette, and with a flat bottom meant to slide over the surface of the course without damaging the ground as the golfer engages in a swing. Because such clubs were once made out of wood, such as beech, maple, or ash, such clubs carry the name today, even if they are already constructed out of titanium, steel, or other strong metal composites.

With the advent of technology, woods are now made out of hardier materials, earning them the name metalwoods. In the early days of modern golf, metalwoods were fortified with foam, to keep them strong, especially since hard swings could make the club shaft crack. There are also different kinds of woods, arranged according to number: the 1 wood, or driver, has the largest head, and is most often used off the tee, or to start a game; shorter woods, or fairway woods, allow golfers to hit golf balls out of the turf.

Irons are golf clubs that are useful in shorter shots, and are utilized by golfers on the greens. These are versatile clubs: advanced players can use irons for a variety of shots, and do not need to keep changing clubs, no matter where they are on the course. New technology, however, has allowed golf equipment designers to come up with a hybrid club, which can allow golfers to do away with large irons.

Hybrid woods are golf clubs that have all the good hitting properties of irons, but also contain the low point of gravity of woods. Hybrid clubs are about two thirds the size of a fairway wood. Hybrid clubs can be used from hard roughs, where golfers have to make a long shot while they can hardly see the ball. In fact, hybrid clubs can be used for any kind of shot where the golfer can find using an iron difficult.

Another kind of golf club, the wedge, is designed to lift the ball out of difficult places, such as the sand. Sand wedges, for instance, have a specifically fashioned underside that can allow a golf ball to overcome the sand particles that can cradle its individual dimples. On the other hand, putters are special clubs that allow golfers to roll a ball across a surface, rather than launching it into the air. Putters are useful for players who are close to the hole and are playing on the green. However, some golf players use putters anywhere where they feel that rolling the ball will do their scores more good, or if they see that they can accidentally launch the ball onto adjoining parts of the green from which there can be no escape.

Making a list of the best burlesque and cabaret clubs in London is in part a fools errand. The requirements of say a middle aged American tourist from the Mid West is going to be very different from that of say a young metropolitan burlesque aficionado or a hen /office party for that matter. And that’s before getting into supper club vs theatre style club vs bar style club, gay vs straight or the whole traditional vs neo burlesque debate. Below are what I call my five “best of breeds”. I make no attempt to crown one “best of show” – continue my canine simile – because to do so would be errant nonsense.

Madame Jojos

A must for everyone not just because it is the Daddy of the burlesque cabaret scene but because through its superlative programming it caters for almost everyone from my American tourist (go for the weekend shows) to my burlesque aficionado hipsters (go for the showcases and some of the midweek shows) not to mention having some rather good club nights (but that’s for another article). If anything the only groups not well catered for I would say are UK hen and office parties who might find the weekend shows too dumbed down (well you try and find humour that can encompass 20 different nationalities – including Japanese – that isn’t!) and the midweek show / showcases a mite inaccessible. Wonderful architecture and a convenient location caps off a great overall package . Other grumbles might be the high prices and the so so food and drinks but that’s not really the point is it. My main criticism is that it leans far too heavily towards traditional burlesque /cabaret forms and is looking increasingly dated for it relative to its more avante garde rivals – shades of The Royal Academy of Art there perhaps in the mid 90s which go so left behind by the likes of Goldsmiths College with the whole Brit Art thing. Still should one expect a venerable Grande Dame to be anything else – I mean would you want your Great grandmother to be break dancing and “getting it on” with the kids Particularly well suited for tourists

Volupte

Again situated conveniently in the West End albeit in a somewhat uninspiring (but well decked out) basement Volupte is my preferred London supper club. Escellent burlesque programming with a good range of both traditional and neo burlesque performers and for that matter a great website too with not a flash of err flash. What I especially like about the programming is that its both sophisticated and accessible at the same time something which from my own experience is quite hard to achieve. Everything is just right from the ever so crisp white linen table clothes to the faux Edwardian table lamps. Good food and drinks service too with a large stage (albeit somewhat obscured behind pillars for some tables so do make sure to check when booking!). Grumbles unfortunately as a supper club the atmosphere can be bit restrained to say the least and with a Holborn address very office party dominated (the yards of white linen only surpassed by the acres of white shirts and ties of the office workers who descend pack like) so the audience is somewhat less sophisticated than the shows (the management by the way are to be complimented for ignoring the “I want more tits and arse” brigade). I am not a great fan of the standing tickets either and as with all West End venues yes the prices are high. An excellent late licence caps off a great night out. Oh and please do avid expensive imitations like Pigalle’s which I have heard nothing but bad reports about (Vince Powers should really stick to rock and roll!)

Vauxhall Tavern

The legendary gay cabaret haunt which has launched just about every gay /transvestite crossover TV comedian and host in the UK and beyond for the last 20 years which tells you something of the quality of the acts here. All this in a venue unparalleled anywhere in the UK for its grossness from the sweat stained black walls to loos indescribable in their filthiness – all which of course provides the perfect backdrop for the b*tch queen from hell style of acts that predominate here (hecklers beware!). Unfortunately this venue is strictly gay so not accessible for the majority of us. People often write of how Lost Vagueness, avante garde performers like Leigh Bowery and clubs like Torture Garden helped spark off the neo burlesque movement . However I suspect the Vauxhall Tavern had a far greater indirect influence than any of these. So for any gay or bi sexual people from overseas visiting London don’t leave till experienced at least one night at The Vauxhall Tavern. But a word of warning do avoid the legion of cheap and expensive imitations from Clapham to Camden – none of them are the patch on the real thing. Finally the Vauxhall Tavern is obviously much more a cabaret than burlesque venue – you won’t be seeing too many girls in feathers not unless they are drag queens that is. Grumbles its gay only and really could do with a tiny bit of a clean and maybe a tiny bit of air conditioning too without of course wanting to in any way change the character of the place. Oh No! Particularly well suited for metropolitan gay and gay friendly customers

Bethnal Green Working Mans Club.

I am not entirely sure why I am including this venue because its not actually a burlesque or cabaret venue at all – it is as the title suggests a working mans club in a really rather unpleasant part of London. It’s also rather unpleasant inside although possibly of interest to sociologists as you do feel you are walking back in time to the 1950s – from the ancient cashier at the front door to the aging beehive haired harridans who pass for bar staff (serving some of the most uninspiring drinks I have seen. Lets just say the mixology revolution forget to get off at Bethnal Green tube) not forgetting vinyl and carpets so decrepit that you wonder it does not stick to your shoes (oh and does on busy nights). The programming is however inspired and its home to some of the best roving neo burlesque club nights (Wham Bam Club for one) and performers (Chocolate Delicieux for one). However do check listings in advance and do ring in advance too or when you arrive you might be very disappointed when you find there is no show and only warm beer in plastic glasses and checkers for entertainment. Particularly well suited for metropolitan sophisticated burlesque aficionados and clubbers

Now I have to confess to some bias here as I book the club and helped create it. However in my defence Peacock Bar has been rated Top London Burlesque Club, Top London Cabaret Club as well as Top Birthday Party venue by ViewLondon [plus won just about every other award under the sun in the last six months including Top London Small Venue from Function Fixers. Our programming is very much neo burlesque – really musical comedy sketches /social commentary in the finest Kinks style. We also specialise in being interactive and bringing audience members on stage with a lot of improve as well as being a bar club rather than a supper club. All of which we believe creates a much livelier, exciting and dynamic atmosphere than you get at either supper clubs (although we do of course provide food) or traditional burlesque shows (well just how many girls in feathers can you see in a lifetime). We also try and program seasonally so for Christmas we are presenting “ Christmas Lunch and Christmas Dinner with a difference with free burlesque and cabaret – put your boss on stage and humiliate him! Particularly well suited for birthday party, Christmas party, hen party and stag party bookings.

Imperial Swing got its name from the Club Imperial located at Goodfellow Boulevard and West Florissant Avenue. The building, originally called Imperial Hall, was built in 1928 as a dance hall, bowling alley and restaurant/bar complex. In the 1930s and 1940s, it was the dance spot of Northwest St. Louis, just as Arcadia (later called Tune Town), the Admiral Showboat in Midtown, and the Casa Loma on the Southside, were the most popular dance halls in their respective areas. In 1952, George Edick Enterprises purchased Imperial Hall and George Edick renamed it the Club Imperial. During the early part of that decade, he operated the club as a ballroom with the theme of “a nice place for nice people.” He played “big band” music and catered primarily to private parties. He was able to regularly book guest appearances with popular performers like Stan Kenton and Louis Prima because Robert Hyland, of CBS and KMOX radio, broadcast his weekly “Coast To Coast with Bob Hyland” program from the Imperial Ballroom.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Edick realized that the country’s taste in music had shifted to “Rock ‘n Roll” and he used his advertising-public relations firm, to aggressively promote the Club Imperial on KWK, KXOK, WIL and WGNU. The Joe Bozzi Quintet, Jimmie (Night Train) Forrest, Chuck Berry, Dolly Parton, the Monkeys, Glen Campbell, Ike and Tina Turner and a small vocal group now called the “Fifth Dimension” are among the many artists who began their careers at his club. He promoted a “Jitterbug” contest where a couple from the Club Imperial (Teddy Cole and Kathy Burke) won the National Jitterbug Championship. During the “Rock ‘n Roll” craze, Edick held Tuesday “Teen Night” dances, and it was during these weekly dances that a jitterbug variation that became known as the “Imperial Style” of St. Louis swing was born. As the 60s progressed, music trends were changing again. The ‘roll’ started dropping out of “Rock ‘n Roll,” the ‘rock’ got harder, and the teenagers increasingly attended loud, psychedelic music concerts. Because the freak-out beats of their acid rock music was almost impossible to dance to, Edick gradually discontinued all public dances at his club.

In the 1970s, George Edick wanted to reintroduce more listenable and danceable music at Club Imperial and he found that hosting swing contests was just the ticket! He got together with Teddy Cole, the Jitterbug champion who was also a dance promoter in his own right, and they decided to sponsor a yearly St. Louis Jitterbug Contest “Imperial Style” to pick a “City Champion.” These widely publicized contests prompted many of the older, experienced dancers to come around the club again, and Edick sponsored a number of “Salute Dances” to introduce these old timers to the newer dancers. As more and more people began learning the Imperial, they began organizing into small dance groups that met in apartment complexes around the St. Louis area, and George Edick kept in touch with many of their leaders.

In 1973 Al Morris conceived the idea of forming a club, and it was his group that first met at the San Miguel apartments in St. Charles which became the St. Louis Imperial Dance Club. The founders are: Dave Cheshire, Jan Cheshire, Rick McQueen, Joan Fritz, Debbie Dustman (Wheelis) and Veronica Lynch. The new club alternated their dances between Lynch’s apartment complex in South County and the Wood Hollow apartments in West County. Edick contacted the Board and he told them that he was very interested in helping their club to fulfill their mission to keep swing dancing alive. The great promoter convinced them, with a persuasive new adaptation of his original 1950s theme, that their growing club should hold their future dances at his Club Imperial ballroom because it’s “a nice place for nice people who like to swing dance!”

Good mottos never die but unfortunately people do, and on June 11, 2002 George Edick passed away. The building is silent now but it stands, not only as a landmark where Imperial Swing all began, but also as a tribute to a man who, over his colorful, eighty-six-year lifetime, was able to convert his dreams into reality . . . not a bad epitaph!

Berlin is famous for its nightlife, and with good reason. There are loads of great places to go for a drink in Berlin, but here are a few of the very best.

If you are keen on trying a little salsa dancing, you should give Havanna on?Hauptstrasse a whirl. Every night, the young and fashionable crowd go wild for the live Latino music, and if you fancy learning some steps, there are dance classes here every day.

The Knaack Klub?on Greifswalder Strasse is a giant club and bar complex set over four floors, with a games room, a live venue, and a choice of bars and disco areas, so whatever your taste, you will probably find something to enjoy here.

If you are a fan of the iconic photography of the legendary Helmut Newton, you will love the Newton Bar on Charlottenstrasse. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with nude photos by the man himself, and there is a cigar lounge upstairs with one of the finest selection of imported cigars you will find anywhere.

Overlooking the Spree river and Oberhaum bridge, the glass fronted Watergate club on?Falckensteinstrasse offers one of the most visually appealing clubbing experiences you will find anywhere. Music policy ranges from minimalist techno to house, and the hipster crowd are generally very well dressed indeed.
